How to invest in mutual funds in Pakistan (2026 guide)
By Blue Ocean Hub Editorial 8 min read
A beginner's guide to investing in Pakistani mutual funds — types, returns, risks, and how to start with Rs 5,000.
Mutual funds are the easiest way for a salaried Pakistani to start investing. You do not need to pick individual stocks, track quarterly results, or understand technical analysis. You hand your money to a professional fund manager, and they do the work for a small fee.
What is a mutual fund?
A mutual fund pools money from thousands of investors and invests it in stocks, bonds, government securities, or a mix. Each investor owns "units" of the fund, and the value of each unit rises or falls with the underlying portfolio.
Types of mutual funds in Pakistan
1. Equity funds
Invest primarily in stocks listed on the PSX. Higher risk, higher expected return. Suitable for 5+ year horizons.
2. Income funds
Invest in government bonds and T-bills. Lower risk, stable returns. Suitable for 1-3 year horizons.
3. Money market funds
Invest in very short-term instruments. Lowest risk, lowest return. Suitable for emergency funds.
4. Balanced funds
Mix of equity and income. Moderate risk and return. Suitable for 3-5 year horizons.
5. Shariah-compliant funds
Avoid interest-bearing instruments and non-halal sectors. Available in equity, income, and balanced variants.
How much do you need to start?
Most Pakistani AMCs (Asset Management Companies) allow you to start with as little as Rs 5,000 for a lump sum or Rs 1,000 per month for a SIP (Systematic Investment Plan).
Expected returns
Historical returns for Pakistani mutual funds (2020-2025):
- Equity funds: 12-18% per year
- Income funds: 10-14% per year
- Money market funds: 8-12% per year
- Balanced funds: 10-15% per year
These are historical, not guaranteed. Past performance does not predict future results.
How to invest step by step
- Choose an AMC — HBL AMC, MCB AMC, NBP AMC, UBL AMC, Al Meezan (Shariah), or Meezan (Shariah) are the largest.
- Complete KYC — submit CNIC, bank account details, and a source-of-funds declaration.
- Select a fund — match the fund type to your time horizon and risk tolerance.
- Invest — transfer money via bank transfer or cheque. Online portals are available for most AMCs.
- Track — check your unit value weekly. Do not panic at short-term dips.
Risks to understand
- Market risk — equity funds can drop 20-30% in a bad year.
- Liquidity risk — some funds have exit loads (fees for early withdrawal).
- Manager risk — the fund manager's decisions affect your returns.
- Inflation risk — if fund returns are below inflation, your real wealth declines.
Tax treatment
Mutual fund returns are taxed at the investor's applicable rate. Dividend income from mutual funds is subject to withholding tax. Capital gains on units held for more than one year may qualify for reduced rates.
Recommended starting point
If you are new to investing, start with a balanced fund or an income fund. Invest Rs 5,000-10,000 per month via SIP for at least 3 years. Review annually, not daily.
